Exposición: Mujeres del Congo. Trabajos de Isabel Muñoz que podrán visitarse 1 de octubre de 2020 al 10 de enero de 2021 en la Sala Martínez Guerricabeitia del Centro Cultural La Nau

The exhibition «Women of the Congo. The road to hope», by the Spanish photographer Isabel Muñoz, Premio Nacional National Award 2016, and the Congalese journalist Caddy Adzuba, Premio Princesa de Asturias de la Concordia award 2014, will arrive at the Centro Cultural La Nau on 1st October, thanks to the agreement recently signed by the Fundació General de la Universitat de València and the Fundación Mainel, in collaboration with Casa África, producer of this exhibition, which has already toured several places in Spain.

The exhibition is a project set up by Fundación Mainel on its thirtieth anniversary. The exhibition was first shown in 2015 at the headquarters of the French Institute in Kinshasa, with the backing of the Embassy of Spain in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The exhibition is a testimony to the context in which the Fundación Mainel launches its development co-operation projects in this country, considered by the United Nations to be one of the worst places in the world to be born a woman.

Isabel Muñoz captures with her photography the dignity of women who have survived sexual violence, a thing which is particularly rife in the western region of the Congo. They are images which tell the stories of brave women who have finally been freed, as an example of how to fight against abuse.

‘Women of the Congo. The road to hope’ is a cultural project which is included in the work ‘Trobades amb la col·lecció’, from the Col·lecció Martínez Guerricabeitia, Universitat de València, dedicated to artists represented by it or which could be included, as is the case of the photographer Isabel Muñoz.

The organisation of the exhibition, under the direction of the Vice Rector Antonio Ariño, in his role as executive vice president of the Fundació General de la Universitat de València, and by the chairman of the Fundación Mainel, Vicente Emilio López Castell, also includes the participation of the Centre Cultural La Nau and the Col·lecció Martínez Guerricabeitia;  produced by  Casa África; and the collaboration of Heineken España and Coca-Cola.

‘Women of the Congo. The road to hope’ will remain in the Sala Martínez Guerricabeitia in La Nau from 1st October, 2020 to 10th January, 2021, if the pandemic permits.

The fight for control of the territory has never ceased and the images that make up this exhibition echo the testimonies of women from Bukavu, in the province of South Kivu, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. They have learnt how to survive the extreme violence they have suffered, picking themselves up and moving forward with a strength and courage that deserves great admiration and deep respect.

This exhibition aims to bring together the stories of these brave women who have managed to survive, free themselves from suffering and finally move forward, with dignity.

These women, who have survived sexual violence used as a weapon of war, want to use this exhibition to show their determination to confront the suffering and say definitively NO to their status as victims. Real progress towards victory against sexual violence.

Another objective of this exhibition is to denounce before the United Nations that UN Security Council Convention 1325 is far from being implemented and that the protection of women remains a crucial issue.
