What is happening in Sahel? A comprehensive analysis of the situation and the future outlook of the region

On 24th October 2012 at Casa África
Mesa redonda: ¿Qué está pasando en el Sahel?. Análisis y perspectivas desde las dos orillas

The international community has for a long time been warning about the situation in Sahel, a transition area between the Sahara desert and the Savannah that extends along the north of the African continent between the Atlantic Ocean and the Red Sea and that lately has become a refuge for terrorists.

This situation was aggravated last April when the the National Liberation Movement of Azawad unilaterally declared this area's independence from Mali, and which is made up from the regions of Timbuktu, Kidal y Gao. Although this declaration has not received international recognition, the army of Mali said it was unable to control the rebels in the north and without a doubt this is causing a lot of problems economically, socially and politically in a country that had achieved a stable democracy.

Due to this, on Wednesday 24th October, Casa África is organising a round table that is open to the public where it hopes to examine this situation in depth so as to give people from the Canary Islands some more information on what is happening in Mali, what the next events may be and among other things how the situation is perceived from Mali itself, how this is affecting the country's development and its companies, and how the future is seen.

To obtain the best overall picture, the table will have the participation of several experts:

For this purpose, Casa África counts on, as part of its coeditions, with the work of International terrorism in Africa. The building up of a threat in Sahel, by professor Jesús A. Núñez Villaverde.

Information about the round table:

  • Place: Casa África. C/. Alfonso XIII, 5. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
  • Date: Tuesday 24 October 2012
  • Time: 19:00h
