Fikile Magubane, ambassador of South Africa in Spain, travelled to Gran Canaria this week to attend the activities organised by the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) for the World Tourism Day, which was held yesterday in the town of Maspalomas, in the south of the island.

During the day's session, the ambassador visited Casa África's headquarters, in the capital of Gran Canaria, to meet up with its general director, Santiago Martínez-Caro, and its general secretary, Luis Padilla, who took the opportunity to show her the institution's objectives and strategies as well as its short term planning. The meeting also was useful to fix an imminent visit to South Africa by Casa África's general director in which he will hold meetings with institutions and organisations regarding economic and cultural matters of the country.

In the agenda for the next few months, Casa África has planned several activities related to South Africa, one of the continent's economic motors and with a large presence of Spanish companies. Right now, Casa África heads up an  artist exchange project  together with Hangar Barcelona and Greatmore Studios through which the Spanish artist Lola Lasurt will undertake a creative residency for three months in Cape Town. Moreover, the institution is awaiting the awarding of a European grant to set up another programme to promote the cultural industry, in this case a musical one.

Yesterday afternoon, Magubane also formed part of the participants in the signing of a memorandum of understanding  between the WTO and  Casa África. This agreement widens the existing collaboration between both organisations, going into greater depth in the planning and support to improve public policies to develop tourism and economic development and generation of employment by promoting strategic alliances as part of the investment and commercialisation of African destinations.
